How to save some extra money before Christmas

Christmas and the holidays can be an expensive time of year.   There are gifts, parties, travel etc.  So here are some tips on how you can save some extra money for the holidays.  I’ve focused on finding extra revenue sources that you can use in your spare time.

 Online Surveys

Online surveys are a reliable way to make a small amount of cash without too much effort.   Swagbucks, our favourite online survey site, pays you anywhere from $0.10 to $2 per survey completed.  Each survey takes around 10-20 minutes to complete.

The surveys are conducted by market research companies who are looking for feedback on their products and services.

While you won’t get rich completing surveys, it’s a great way to earn money in your spare time.  You can easily complete surveys while watching TV.

Start Micro Investing

If you’re just putting money aside in an online savings account, you’re missing out on some extra cash you could be making.  Banks these days, only pay small amounts of interest.  Usually much less than the inflation rate.  And this means your money is worth less and less as time goes by.   While savings accounts are great for an emergency fund or putting money aside for bills etc, they’re not great for long term saving.

Micro Investing is one way to beat inflation and also earn a little extra money on your existing savings.    With Micro Savings, you invest small amounts in a diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds.  Using an app like Raiz, this process is entirely automated.  You can check out my results of using Raiz here.

If you like to save up for christmas travel or other expenses over the course of a year, using something like Raiz is a solid option.

Try Micro Tasks

Platforms like Amazon’s Mechanical Turk will pay you to complete micro tasks.  These tasks could be anything from categorizing an image, to finding search results on the internet.  These tasks usually take less than a minute and you’ll be paid a few cents per task completed.  It’s pretty mindless work, but a good way to earn from your spare time.

Sell your skills

On Fiverr you can sell your services.  This could be anything from drawing a picture, recording a voiceover or posting something to Twitter.  Fiverr tasks are meant to be sold for around $5, but you can charge more for more intensive ones.

While you can complete Fiverr jobs part time, some people make a full time living on Fiverr.
